Февраль 1987 года стал счастливым месяцем для астрономов: в одной из ближайших к нам галактик произошел взрыв сверхновой. Подобные события не наблюдались с конца 17 века! Стоит также уточнить, что под понятием «сверхновая» принято понимать тот облик, который принимает звезда, превосходящая Солнце по своей массе в 8 или 25 раз, перед своей смертью.
Однако в тот удачный февральский день телескоп «Хаббл» еще не был запущен, это произошло спустя три года. Тогда астрономы смогли получить снимки с телескопа Хаббл высокого разрешения, запечатлевшие последствия этого события. Вокруг взорвавшейся звезды было обнаружено 3 кольца, причем некоторые из них образовались еще во время ее существования. Кольца имеют причудливые формы (например, в виде песочных часов).
Это подтверждают и продолжающиеся исследования агоний звезд: телескоп «Хаббл» с середины прошлого века запечатлел их более 2 000 вместе с детальной обрисовкой их сложнейших форм. Это могут быть, например, несколько концентрических кругов, на первый взгляд напоминающих глаз быка.
Кроме того, в 1944 году с помощью космического телескопа «Хаббл» было обнаружено необычное явление: на центральном кольце вследствие врезающихся выбросов сверхновой стали появляться пятна.
В целом, данные, полученные телескопом в данном направлении, продвинули исследования природы небесных светил и их смерти, но сказать, что она стала полностью изученной, не представляется возможным.
