Performance
The EX2F is aimed at demanding enthusiasts for whom performance is a high priority, and it doesn’t disappoint. From a cold start it can start up, focus and take a picture in approximately two seconds, which is extremely fast for a compact camera. In single-shot super-fine JPEG mode it has a shot-to-shot time of approximately one second, while in Raw+JPEG mode it can maintain approximately one shot every three seconds, both of which are very impressive figures.
Samsung makes a big thing of the EX2F’s low-light shooting ability, so I tried it out at a bonfire party earlier this month. I was certainly impressed with the autofocus system, which focuses quickly and accurately even outdoors at night in near complete darkness. In good light it is even quicker; it’s certainly one of the most effective compact camera contrast-detection AF systems I’ve used.
Another highlight is the continuous shooting mode, or rather modes; the EX2F can shoot at full 12-megapixel resolution at three, five or 10 frames a second, although only for 10 frames, and it then takes as long as nine seconds before it finishes writing them all the memory card.
One question that I cannot fully answer is battery duration. The EX2F is powered by a decent-sized 1,030mAh li-ion rechargeable, but Samsung makes no particular claim for it. I found that on a full charge, a couple of weeks of shooting, playing with the Wi-Fi features and taking about 170 test shots it was down to one bar on the meter. I’d call that fairly average performance; I suspect that if you leave the Wi-Fi off it’ll be good for about 250 shots on a charge.
Image Quality
The jump from the EX1’s 10-megapixel CCD sensor to the EX2F’s 12.4-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor shows Samsung is keen to address any shortcomings with previous camera’s image quality.
We think the EX1 was more than reasonable at the lower ISO settings and that the EX2F builds on these foundations.
ISO 80-200 produce good results, despite some artefacts — that show as teeny, «sharpened» black blobs — that are noticeable when viewing at 100 per cent size.
Colour noise isn’t a problem at the lowest of ISO settings, and while there’s some slight speckled noise that rears its colourful head from ISO 800 and beyond, results are still on form at up to ISO 1600. Or at least good enough.
ISO 3200-6400 collapse into a bit of a colour-noise-ridden soup unfortunately, to the point that it doesn’t look great even on the camera’s rear LCD screen.
But here’s the thing: use the f/1.4 aperture and that will mean plenty of light can reach the sensor to help avoid high ISO settings as required. Not everything can be shot at f/1.4 and look good, of course, but having the equal-best wide aperture setting gives the EX2F an extra tick in the box that only the Panasonic Lumix LX7 can match up to.
Samsung’s decision to use a limited zoom range seems to have worked wonders for any other potential imaging problems too. Shots are, in general, sharp throughout, there are few distortion problems and barely a whisper of chromatic aberration.
Occasionally we thought that auto white balance could be a little too warm when indoors under artificial lighting, but this wasn’t a problem outside — whether in sun or rain — in our tests.
Verdict
Samsung’s current fascination with Wi-Fi will please some and leave others shrugging their shoulders. As it stands the EX2F’s Wi-Fi feature is okay, it’s certainly something that similar competitors don’t offer, but it does stick a knife in the battery life.
Brush that feature aside and focus on the EX2F’s core features and there’s plenty to like: the f/1.4 maximum aperture (which dips to f/2.7 at the 80mm equivalent) is right up there with the brightest available; the lower ISO settings deliver sharp, detailed images; and the vari-angle OLED screen is great for unusual shooting positions. There’s even a hotshoe for additional accessories (though we’d like to see more surface sometime soon) and the dual-dial, dual-thumbwheel-esque controls work well.
But this market area is full of serious competition. The EX2F’s limited zoom range, inconsistent autofocus, lack of a lens control ring or accessory port for an electronic viewfinder (an optical one can be cold-mounted via the hotshoe however) are all points against this model. It’ll deliver great quality images for the given sensor size, sure, but it’s not going to counter something like the Sony RX100.
It’s not to be underestimated though. This is Samsung on form, that lens is a cracker and, apart from a couple of points that still need addressing, we rather like the EX2F. Though it could do with a cooler, more palatable name.

Однако есть у EX2F плюс, который камерам с большим сенсором крыть нечем, — это значительно большая глубина резкости, что вполне логично, учитывая размеры сенсора. Нельзя забывать и о потрясающем поворотном AMOLED-дисплее, ведь сейчас крайне мало камер, оборудованных OLED-матрицами, так что и дисплей стоит причислить к особенностям нашей подопытной.
Как и большинство камер, оборудованных КМОП-сенсором, EX2F умеет снимать автоматические панорамы, причём весьма неплохого качества, однако разрешение панорам всё же значительно ниже, чем, например, у компактов Sony с функцией Panorama Sweep. Процесс создания панорамы довольно прост — достаточно нажать клавишу спуска затвора и, удерживая её, постепенно поворачивать камеру, причём направление поворота заранее выбирать не приходится. В процессе съёмки в нижней части экрана отображается графический прогресс-бар, в котором в реальном времени прорисовывается миниатюра отснятой панорамы.

Возможна также съёмка в режиме HDR, причём смазывание кадров не наблюдается даже без штатива, конечно, если производится съёмка неподвижного объекта. В наборе сюжетных программ также предусмотрена съёмка 3D-фото, но камера чрезвычайно быстро делает два последовательных снимка, из-за чего смещение оптической оси камеры, а следовательно, и эффект 3D незначительны.
Главное отличие EX2F от предшественницы — наличие Wi-Fi-модуля. На заре эры камер с Wi-Fi их способности в плане передачи данных были весьма скудными — фактически можно было лишь отправлять отснятый материал на ПК. В современных камерах возможности беспроводного соединения куда интереснее. Конечно, можно, как и прежде, передавать фото и видео на ПК (так называемая функция автоматического архивирования), но теперь есть и возможность пересылки снимков на смартфоны. Поддерживаются мобильные операционные системы iOS и Android. Для работы данной функции необходимо лишь загрузить бесплатную программу Samsung Mobile Link в соответствующем магазине приложений. Однако смартфон можно использовать не только как хранилище фотографий с камеры, но и как удалённый видоискатель и пульт дистанционного управления при помощи функции Remote Viewfinder. Как и в случае Mobile Link, для работы функции на смартфон необходимо загрузить фирменное бесплатное ПО.
Источники питания и автономная работа
Камера оборудована аккумулятором ёмкостью 3,8 Вт*ч, то есть не слишком-то большим. Например, у Panasonic DMC-LX5 ёмкость аккумулятора составляет 4,5 Вт*ч, у Nikon P7100 — вовсе 7,6 Вт*ч. Однако у двух конкурентов аккумуляторы ещё более скромные: Fujifilm x10 оборудован аккумулятором ёмкостью 3,4 Вт*ч, а камера Olympus XZ-1 является лишь чуть более энерговооруженной — 3,5 Вт*ч. Performance
Whether you want Wi-Fi on a camera’s feature list is by the by really. Anyone after a top-spec compact will expect top-spec performance.
Pop the EX2F into its multi-area autofocus — there are also center, selection and AF tracking options — and the camera does a good job at speeding into focus. We’ve compared it side-by-side to the Panasonic Lumix LX7, for example, and it’s just as good.
That is until other factors are introduced. The «selection AF» allows a single point to be positioned on the screen, but the confined area is rather central to the screen rather than anywhere near edge-to-edge which is restrictive. But it’s how the single point responds inconsistently that is among the EX2F’s biggest frustrations.
Close-up focus, for example, is often undermined by the focus system failing to focus on even a well-edged, contrasty subject that’s well within the camera’s focus range abilities. The speed is there, but the consistency lacks, with that frustrating red «fail» square often rearing its head when it shouldn’t need to.
Manual focus, too, doesn’t benefit from the presence of a manual zoom lens ring. Instead the rear d-pad is used to shift the focus between infinity and «macro» (as represented by symbols, though with no focal distance provided) in this mode. It works ok, but some kind of focus peaking to confirm focus or a greater magnification from the manual focus assist option would be of significant use.
The original EX1 wasn’t known for being a super-speedy camera, and that’s something that the EX2F improves upon thanks to its 10 frames per second (10fps) burst mode. In JPEG-only the camera will whizz through a full 10 frames in one sitting (though no more), which it takes a mere couple of seconds to save. There’s no burst shooting available when shooting raw files but we’re not surprised about this and it’s probably for the best. Single shooting of raw files is now swift enough, which is a big improvement over its predecessor.

Wi-Fi
The new Wi-Fi feature takes pride of place on the right of the d-pad for quick access, but here’s the thing: the Wi-Fi option relies on syncing with your smartphone.
We think Samsung’s making more of an effort than any other given manufacturer, and the Galaxy camera sure looks like a clear direction of where camera-based Wi-Fi and sharing will go, but the EX2F feels, as it is, like a first try; an incomplete solution. It works fine enough, but it’s not as immediate or fluid to use as that of a smartphone.
Saying that, there are no competitors with Wi-Fi in their high-end compact cameras. Perhaps it’s because that kind of target user is unfazed by such a feature, plus there’s the obvious negative impact on battery life — the EX2F doesn’t last out for as long as we’d like it to — which all stack up as downsides rather than positives.

Design and features
Samsung and Panasonic are rivals in many areas of business and industry, so it’s little surprise that their camera lines are also in close competition. The EX range was launched to compete directly with Panasonic’s acclaimed Lumix LX series, and the EX2F has many similarities to the new LX7. Like the Panasonic model, it features an advanced back-illuminated 1/1.7in sensor, but trumps the LX7’s 10.1-megapixel resolution with 12.4-megapixels. The LX7 has a Leica-branded, 3.8x zoom lens (24-90mm equiv.), with optical image stabilisation and a maximum aperture of f1.4-2.3; the EX2F matches this very closely with a Schneider-Kreuznach, 3.3x zoom lens (24-80mm equiv.), with optical image stabilisation and a maximum aperture of f/1.4-2.7.
The two cameras are also closely matched physically. The EX2F measures 112.1 x 62.4 x 45.8mm and weighs 306g including battery and memory card — all within a couple of millimetres and a few grams of the LX7. One feature, however, does distinguish the two cameras; the EX2F has a 3in fully articulated AMOLED VGA monitor with 614,000-dot resolution. It is a superb screen, incredibly sharp with excellent contrast and bright enough to use even in daylight. Like the LX7 and indeed most other compact cameras the EX2F doesn’t have an eyepiece viewfinder.
While Panasonic’s LX series has always been praised for its elegant good looks, the EX2F is never going to win any beauty contests. The design is uncompromisingly practical, with hard right-angled corners, flat surfaces and simple round buttons. It’s a very solidly made camera, with a strong all-metal body, and the pivot for the monitor screen looks very robust.
Despite its industrial looks it’s actually a very pleasant camera to use; the large textured handgrip and rear thumb rest provide secure and comfortable handling, and the controls are chunky but solidly mounted and accessible. It has two main dials on the top for exposure mode and drive mode, while an input wheel on the front of the handgrip and a rotary D-pad bezel allow quick adjustment of exposure settings and manual focusing. The graphical function menu provides quick access to main shooting settings such as ISO, exposure compensation, metering mode and focus mode. One slight puzzle, though, is the manual aperture control, which is calibrated with seemingly arbitrary aperture values rather than the traditional 1/3-stop intervals.
In common with just about every other electronic device on the planet, the EX2F can shoot full HD video, with stereo audio recorded via two built-in microphones on the top panel. Metering modes, white balance, neutral-density filter and smart filters can be used in video mode, as can full optical zoom, which slows down to reduce motor noise. However, it lacks some advanced features such as aperture control or slow motion. The microphones are also very prone to wind noise when shooting outdoors, as is frequently the case.
Like several other current Samsung cameras the EX2F features a number of Smart Wi-Fi functions designed to work with a smartphone or tablet. To use these features you have to download an app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play, install it, and then connect the phone to the camera via the EX2F’s built-in Wi-Fi portal. The Remote Viewfinder app allows you to take full control of the camera from the connected device, with the ability to change exposure settings, zoom in and out and take pictures, which can then be saved to the device.
Conclusion
The Samsung EX2F is a solid upgrade of the EX1, but 2 years is a long time in the world of digital cameras and the EX2F doesn’t quite offer enough to keep up with the competition, despite featuring the world’s fastest lens on any compact.
Indeed, it’s that super-fast lens that inadvertently brings one of the camera’s key handling flaws to light. Using the wide-open F.1/4 aperture in bright sunlight inevitably causes the image to be over-exposed — the new ND filter is on hand to solve that problem, but it quickly becomes annoying having to dip into the Function menu to toggle it on and off (at least 5 button presses are required to do so). Samsung have also seen fit to relegate the ISO speed to the same sub-menu, again slowing down the operation of the camera. Coupled with lacklustre performance when shooting RAW and a more general inability to customise the camera controls to suit your way of working, it makes the Samsung EX2 more frustrating to use than its key rivals.
Image quality is very good for a compact, thanks to the larger than usual CCD sensor and the sharp and bright 24-80mm lens. While some people will find the 3.3x zoom limiting, it does help to ensure that the picture quality remains at a high level throughout the focal range, with little distortion, chromatic aberrations or even noise until you use ISO 800 or faster. Recent rivals have delivered better image quality though, in particular the smaller Sony Cyber-shot RX100 with it’s even larger sensor, so while the EX2F succeeds in modestly increasing the megapixel count without any detrimental effects, it can’t quite match the competition.
Samsung have addressed two of the key criticisms that we levelled at its predecessor, namely a lack of burst shooting mode and very limited video recording options, with the EX2F capable of shooting 10fps and full 1080p movies with stereo sound. Even these improvements are a little short of other cameras, though, with the burst shooting only possible when shotting JPEGs and a lack of creative control over exposure when shooting a movie.
So far it seems that the Samsung EX2F is something of a let-down, but that’s definitely only relative to a few key competitors. The EX2F remains a serious photographic tool that concentrates on delivering high quality images with the minimum of fuss, yet can still be carried in your pocket. Unfortunately it just isn’t quite as refined in terms of handling, performance or image quality as recent cameras like the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7. Дисплей и интерфейс
Как уже упоминалось, в камере установлен AMOLED-дисплей с разрешением 614 тыс. точек. Дисплей, одним словом, великолепен — нет проблемы с углами обзора, как у LCD-матриц, огромная контрастность, прекрасная цветопередача, приличный запас яркости, к тому же не стоит забывать о низком энергопотреблении AMOLED-дисплеев. Но недостатки всё же есть. Защита дисплея довольно тонкая, пластик мягкий, поэтому она легко прогибается при давлении и царапается. Тут спасает поворотная конструкция, которая предохраняет дисплей от механических повреждений при транспортировке. Однако есть другая проблема — отпечатки, которые мгновенно покрывают антибликовый слой. К слову, антибликовый слой оправдывает своё название, поэтому работа вне помещения при ярком солнечном освещении весьма комфортна.

Интерфейс чрезвычайно сильно похож на большинство менюшек современных камер Samsung, в том числе модели EX1. Конечно, меню немного модифицировано, но привыкать к нему не приходится. Интерфейс камер Samsung нельзя назвать наиболее интуитивно понятным, но проблем с его освоением не возникнет ни у кого. Анимации меню довольно много, но она очень быстрая и плавная, поэтому дискомфорта не вызывает. Фактически небольшая задержка возникает только при смене режимов работы, но менять их приходится не так уж часто, поэтому столь небольшую оплошность камере можно простить.
