What is a RAW File

A Raw file is a group of unhandled datum. It means the file hasn’t been modified, no compressions were made or no operations were produced by the PC.

Raw Image Formats on Different Cameras

Raw files are often applied with PC software tools which download and handle the data. The changes you are making during a raw file editing are called «non-destructive» methods because they are not permanently implemented. The alterations are not embedded into the raw file, they are kept next to it as a block of orders. Taking your snapshots in raw is one of the optimal ways to have a total control over your images during photo retouching. You need a special software to open your files, such as Lightroom, for example. Can you open RAW files in Lightroom? If no, then we’ll show you the best way to import photos into Lightroom.

RAW

Pros+

  • Wide opportunities in image editing
  • Correction of exposure and white balance after shooting
  • Correction of chromatic aberrations after shooting
  • Complete image data
  • Color correction after shooting

Cons-

  • Very large size of RAW-file
  • RAW files cannot be used immediately
  • Separate programs are required to edit or convert the image
  • It takes more time for recording on the memory card
  • The process of editing often takes a lot of PC resources and lime

What is the Difference Between RAW and JPEG?

There’s no difference between RAW and JPEG at the very moment the photo is being taken because JPEG begins as a raw file. But the photo camera modifies a file into JPEG to save it to the storage card. Thus, the picture options are being embedded into the JPEG. Are you intending to become a real pro tog? Then you have no choice but to learn how to apply RAW files which greatly help to improve the quality of your snapshots.

The data of a raw file is stored together with the picture data rather than being constantly applied to it. It’s convenient to use RAW files during the editing process. There’s also a difference between the formats – it’s the «depth» of the pixels. JPEG uses 8-bit, while raw files use 12 or 14 bit, thus storing more color data. You can notice that when you are using JPEG the colors start splitting quicker.

Lightroom Classic CC 7.0.1 now available

We understand we sent perpetual customers down a path of subscribing to a trial version of the new Lightroom Classic CC last week, replacing already installed versions of Lightroom 6.

The good news is we fixed this issue and wanted to get a quick release out to immediately address your concerns.  Now once you click on the “Update” button next to Lightroom Classic CC, you will see under the Advanced Options, the “Remove old versions” is unchecked by default.  As a result, you can try out Lightroom Classic CC for the trial period and still keep Lightroom 6 running in tandem on your desktop.

We sincerely apologize for not providing a better user experience for our perpetual customers to try out Lightroom Classic CC while still keeping Lightroom 6 in place.  This was a mistake on our end.  Please let us know if you are experiencing any additional issues with this process moving forward.

New default option for perpetual customers interested in trialing Lightroom Classic CC:

A few clarifications for this release:

What is the difference between Lightroom Classic CC 7.0 vs. Lightroom Classic CC 7.0.1?

The difference is the fix mentioned above, which only impacts perpetual customers, and the customer issue below, which impacts both perpetual and monthly subscribers.  If any customer is experiencing crashes in High Sierra upon import from external devices (SD cards/iPhone, etc.), we recommend you upgrade to 7.0.1.  Regardless, it’s best to stay up to date with the latest version of Lightroom Classic, and it’s free to do so as a paid, monthly subscriber.

How can I download Lightroom 6 if it’s already been removed in the process of downloading Lightroom CC Classic before this release?

Please follow the steps referenced under “Reinstall Lightroom 6.”

What happens if I attempt to update all apps that I am subscribed to?

Lightroom 6.13 now available

The goal of this release is to provide perpetual customers additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.

A few clarifications for this release:

Do I need upgrade to Lightroom 6.13 when Lightroom Classic CC  has already launched?

You should only update to Lightroom 6.13 if you are currently holding a license to our perpetual, non-subscription-based product.

Is this the last upgrade of Lightroom perpetual product?

As we align our investments in the direction of supporting our subscription-based products, the last version of Lightroom 6 will be coming out towards the end of the year.   If there is a camera not supported in Lightroom 6, you can use the DNG converter before importing your images into Lightroom 6.

As a perpetual license customer, can I try out Lightroom Classic in tandem with Lightroom 6 to see if I am interested in upgrading?

Yes.  We highly encourage you to try out Lightroom Classic to get the additional performance benefits and feature enhancements launched recently and to come.  If you are interested in trying out Lightroom Classic, while still keeping a version of Lightroom 6 in tandem on your desktop, check out Lightroom Classic CC 7.0.1.

How to Import RAW Files Into Lightroom IPad

Do you still think that it’s impossible to import RAW files in Lightroom to your phone? Then you are mistaken. Previous Lightroom Mobile maintained RAW files but only for DNG. But now the situation is different and you can open the native RAW files on your phone made by any photo camera in real-time mode.

Importing RAW Images Into Lightroom Mobile:

A great Lightroom update for Mobile was made by Adobe in 2016 and now you are able to know how to open RAW files in Lightroom , which even can be employed with Lightroom for Desktop. A splendid news for photogs. Lightroom Mobile makes it possible for you to perform the same manipulations as for Lightroom Desktop.

ACR 10 is now available

(c) B. Winston Hendrickson

Camera Raw 10 is now available as a final release available in the Adobe Create Cloud desktop app.

Range Mask

Range Mask works within the structure of the existing local adjustment tools to give you more precision with your local adjustments. One way to think of it is that Range Mask is a modifier that can be applied to a local adjustment, allowing you to create more precise selections with less hassle.  Range Mask is designed to be easy to use, and the resulting mask can be further refined by nudging the sliders.

Range Mask has two different modes to address two different types of color/tone-based masks: Color Range Mask and Luminance Range Mask.

Usage Instructions:

  1. Open an image into the Camera Raw plugin
  2. Select one of the local adjustment tools (Local Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter, Radial Filter) and make an initial mask of your intended selection area.
  3. From the Range Mask option, select either Color or Luminance.
    • Color: Use the Eyedropper to select the colors you’d like to include in your selection. You can select up to 5 different colors using the Shift + click method with the eyedropper.  Alternatively, you can sample a range of colors, even completely different colors, by dragging out an area with the eyedropper. Once selected, you can further refine your selection using the Amount slider.
    • Luminance: Use the Range and Smoothness sliders to adjust your mask and fine tune.
  4. Use the local adjustment sliders to make the desired edits to your images.

Check out Julieanne Kost’s video on the new Range Mask feature in Camera Raw 10.

Announcing the December Update to Lightroom

Today we’re proud to release updates to the entire Lightroom CC ecosystem, including for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and the web, as well as updates to Lightroom Classic CC and Adobe Camera Raw. We’ve added support for new cameras and lenses, and added some great new features.

Please note that we are moving to a new blog home.  Check it out here

Android

In addition to the new Auto described above, we added the following to Lightroom CC on Android:

  • App Shortcuts — For Android Nougat and later devices, tap and hold on the app icon to quickly launch the app into popular modes.
  • More control for managing storage.
  • Resolved an issue that prevented some Huawei customers from importing images.
  • Resolved an issue that caused a crash for some Pixel 2 customers on export.
  • Resolved a problem that prevented some Samsung customers from installing the previous version.
  • Bug fixes and speed improvements.

Lightroom Tech Questions

Some users have about 8TB worth of photos. How do they fit that into 1TB of space?
TH: We have plans available for 1TB, 2TB, 5TB and 10TB right now at $9.99 per TB per month.  Let us know if you want more.

What if you don’t have superfast, unlimited Internet to sync everything? Won’t it likely take days to upload a full shoot of raw files to a cloud server?
TH: Upload times depend on your bandwidth but you can still start working on your images immediately. If your bandwidth is not going to support your current volume of photography, Lightroom Classic is and will continue to be an excellent workflow choice.

Support for the Nikon D850 and Lightroom

Today we released an update to the ACR plug-in and DNG Converter to support the new Nikon D850 proprietary format and a handful of Nikon lenses. We plan to have an equivalent Lightroom update soon. In the meantime, we understand that this represents a significant inconvenience for Lightroom customers with a Nikon D850 and ask for your patience while we work to deliver a high-quality update.  In the interim, you can use the free DNG Converter on Nikon D850 raw images prior to Lightroom import.

DNG Converter

Download and Install DNG Converter:

  • Mac: http://www.adobe.com/go/dng_converter_mac
  • Win: http://www.adobe.com/go/dng_converter_win

Double click on the downloaded file and follow the screen prompts to install.

Lightroom Classic and Adobe Camera Raw

In addition to the new Auto described above, we’ve made a refinement to the Color Range Masking tool.  Based on your feedback, we’ve made it easier to remove individual sample points. You can do this by holding down the Alt (Win) or Option (Mac) key while using your mouse to select the sample point.  To learn more, check out the “What’s New in Lightroom Classic” page.

Lightroom Classic CC also now supports tethered capture with the Nikon D850 camera.

An update to Lightroom 6 for perpetual licensed customers for new camera support will be available on December 19th.

We’ve excited about the December update, and can’t wait to hear your thoughts and feedback.

Answering Your Questions on Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic CC and More

I’d like to address some of the concerns from our Lightroom community after yesterday’s announcements.  If you have any additional questions or concerns, please add them to the comments section below.

Regards,

Tom

How does this update affect my old Photography/Creative Cloud Plan?
TH: Within the Creative Cloud Photography plan we’ve updated the Lightroom you know and love to include performance and editing enhancements in a new version called Lightroom Classic. We added new Lightroom CC and a small amount of storage for you to experiment and try out the new cloud-based Lightroom offering.  The Creative Cloud Photography plan – Lightroom Classic, Photoshop CC, and now the new Lightroom CC plus Adobe Spark – is still $9.99 per month. There is also a new Lightroom CC plan that is $9.99 per month that does not include Lightroom Classic or Photoshop CC but does include 1TB of cloud storage for your photography library.

Lightroom Classic

Is Lightroom Classic being phased out? How long will it be until Adobe kills Lightroom Classic?
TH: No, we’re not phasing out Lightroom Classic and remain committed to investing in Lightroom Classic in the future. We know that for many of you, Lightroom Classic, is a tool you know and love and so it has an exciting roadmap of improvements well into the future. But please hold us accountable as we make updates in the following months and years to let us know if we’re meeting your expectations.

Lightroom CC

Does everything have to be synced to Lightroom CC or can users pick and choose what content syncs with the cloud?
TH: For this 1.0 release, everything imported is intended to upload to Creative Cloud. We clearly understand that there are situations where a customer would not want all of their images uploaded to Creative Cloud so let’s talk about those situations and how we can address them. In the case where a customer doesn’t want any images in the Creative Cloud, Lightroom Classic is and will continue to be an excellent workflow choice.

Lightroom 6

Why did you abandon the Lightroom standalone version?
TH: Customers are overwhelmingly choosing the Creative Cloud Photography plan as the preferred way to get access to Lightroom. We’re aligning our investment with the direction our customers have signaled over the last several years.

14 now available last perpetual update of Lightroom

The goal of this release is to provide perpetual customers additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.  You should only update to Lightroom 6.14 if you are currently holding a license to our perpetual product.

Please note, there will be no additional updates after 6.14 for the perpetual, standalone version of Lightroom.  You can check out this blog post for more information when this was announced earlier.

As always, new cameras are supported for legacy versions of Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge, After Effects, and Photoshop Elements through the free Adobe DNG Converter.

For native camera raw support and ongoing updates with new features try out Lightroom Classic or Lightroom CC. These features include color and luminance range masking and the new auto.  This along with other future imaging and performance enhancements are automatically included with a membership.

Find the latest available downloads of Lightroom 6 here. If you have a Creative Cloud plan of any type, you do not need to purchase Lightroom 6.

You can also find the new cameras and lens profiles that are now supported with 6.14.

Thanks!
