Introduction
The Nikon D3x is the highest resolution digital SLR camera currently available, offering a massive 24.6 megapixels courtesy of its full-frame FX format CMOS sensor. The D3x is largely based on the 12 megapixel D3 camera, retaining the same 51-point AF system, EXPEED engine with 14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit image processing, 920,000-dot 3-inch LCD screen, and Live View. The main differences between the two are the reduced 50-6400 ISO range and slower 5fps continuous shooting speed offered by the D3x — plus the eye-watering price-tag of £5499.99 / €7728.00 / $7999.95, over twice as much as it’s closest rivals, the Sony A900, Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Nikon D3. Does the Nikon D3x offer enough features and sheer quality to justify its asking price? Gavin Stoker found out…
Reception
Many independent reviews and comparisons show that image noise was improved up to 2 stops compared to the Nikon D3 or D700. Other functions, especially autofocus and speed, support this, causing PhotographyBlog to conclude: “hand-held photography anytime, anywhere, without flash”. There are comparisons with the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, which is rated 1.3 stops lower by DxOMark on their low-light ISO score (1320 ISO vs. 3253 ISO for the D3s).
Low-noise videos are valuated useful. While not officially documented in user’s manual, D3s indeed features the full manual control in D-Movie mode, including aperture, shutter speed and ISO. This feature was reported and posted by various users and eventually confirmed officially.
On 21 December 2009, Nikon announced that NASA had purchased 11 D3s bodies and assorted lenses for use in the United States space program, including on the International Space Station. The D3s cameras are identical to the model sold to terrestrial users and will be used unmodified.
In April 2010, the D3S received a Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) 2010 Award in the category of «Best Digital SLR Professional». In August 2010, the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) presented the D3S with the European Professional Camera 2010-2011 award, citing high ISO sensitivity combined with low noise and a high level of detail.

Introduction
The Nikon D3S is a 12-megapixel full-frame digital SLR camera that boasts a sensitivity range of ISO 200 to ISO 12,800; expandable all the way to an incredible ISO 102,400. Successor to the popular Nikon D3, the Nikon D3S is a fully-fledged pro DSLR and the first Nikon FX body capable of high-definition video recording. Inheriting the rugged build, weatherproofing, large and bright viewfinder, high-resolution rear screen, dual memory card slots, 51-point AF module, 9-fps continuous shooting speed and dazzling range of customisation options of its predecessor; the new D3S gains a few new features first seen in Nikon’s cheaper DSLRs, such as automatic sensor cleaning, in-camera raw conversion, dedicated Live view and info buttons, a Quiet shooting mode and a stereo microphone input. Other enhancements versus the Nikon D3 include a larger buffer, a new 1.2x crop mode, a bracketing option for Active D-lighting and a new Vignette Control feature that seeks to reduce the noticeable corner shading common with full-frame digital cameras. The Nikon D3S is currently available for pre-order priced at £4199.99 / €5100.00 / $5199.95.
