M/A — M Switch
Nikon goofed. This switch should be labeled «A — M.»
The «M/A» position means autofocus. It’s called «M/A» because you also can focus manually simply by grabbing the focus ring in this position.
The «M/A» position means autofocus. It’s called «M/A» because back in the old days, when Nikon had almost caught up to Canon who had been doing this for ten years before, Nikon was trying to show off that you could focus manually while in the AF position.
Paint over the extra M if you’re easily confused.
The M setting means manual only.
VR Switch
Leave this at NORMAL.
ACTIVE is for when you are shooting from a moving platform like an aircraft, car or motorcycle, or while skydiving.
If you’re not moving but your subject is, use NORMAL. ACTIVE is only for when you’re in motion.
OFF is for when you’re on a very sturdy tripod.
Recommendations
General
This is the most useful general purpose zoom you can buy for your Nikon FX camera. If you don’t mind paying for it and carrying it, there’s no question that’s it’s Nikon’s best.
This new 24-70 VR is Nikon’s sharpest midrange zoom and is the world’s first pro midrange zoom with VR, but it’s also the biggest and heaviest midrange zoom from anyone.
It has unbeaten optics, and adds VR for great low-light and night shots with no need for a tripod.
Filters
For protection I prefer the bulletproof Hoya 82mm HD UV or 82mm HD clear filters because they resist fingerprints and physical abuse. They really are made of super-tough glass.
If you want to stick with Nikon, the Nikon 82mm NC filter is extremely quality, but not fingerprint or abuse resistant.
The best buy in an ultra high quality polarizer is the Hoya 82mm HD Polarizer. It’s optically superb as well as indestructible. The Nikon 82mm Polarizer is almost as good, but costs more.
The Hoya HD2 filters are newer and even fancier, but I don’t know if they are any better then the extraordinary HD filters which already are fingerprint and abuse proof and optically superb.
Where to get Yours
I got mine at Adorama. I’d also recommend getting it at B&H, at Amazon or at Crutchfield. I’ve been getting service from all these places since the 1970s, and since the 1990s for Amazon.
When you use those or any of when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live, it helps me keep adding to this ad-free website — but I receive nothing for these efforts if you take the chance of buying elsewhere. Unlike a bottle of milk or DVD, Nikon doesn’t seal its boxes so you have no idea if you’re actually getting a used product if you risk buying at retail. Never buy at retail.
DO NOT buy this lens from anyplace, especially your local retail store, unless it’s on my , because Nikon doesn’t seal its boxes in any way. If you risk buying at retail or from another online source, you’ll have no way of knowing how many people have already played with your «new» lens, or if it’s used, returned, incomplete or damaged. I use the because they ship from secure remote warehouses where no customers or salesmen can get their sticky hands on your new lens before you do. have the best prices, service, return policies and selection, which is why I’ve been buying from most of them since the 1970s.
Thanks!
Ken.

The biggest help is when you use any of when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site’s, and thus my family’s, biggest source of support. These places have the best prices and service, which is why I’ve used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

The 24-70 A great lens for all occasions
This is a very handy lens, and it is one of the lenses that I use the most! In recent years, I’ve begun using the Nikon 28-300 quite a bit. For more information on that, see my Nikon 28-300 review.
I don’t know anyone that doesn’t like this lens after they have tried it. It serves me in 80% of the cases when I am not needing a super-wide angle for landscape. For that, I use the 14-24 (see my Nikon 14-24 Review for more info).
I know I have all levels of photographers that come visit these reviews, so here is something for the beginner side of things that will help. Why would anyone want to spend over $1,000 on a lens with limited range when you can get one with a wider range for less? Well, the big answer is in that f/2.8. Remember, the LOWER that number, the better. What that essentially allows is you to take very nice looking photographs of people (or things) where THEY are the only ones in focus, and everything else is all blurry. (Yes, pros out there rolling your elitist eyes… there is more to it than that, but that’s all beginners need to know.) After you get the lens, you’ll start to notice all the other advantages of having such a low f-stop.
I used this lens all the time back on my D2X and I currently still use it on my D3X. It will continue to stay with you as you upgrade cameras. I can still see myself using it for the next 3-5 years, so it really is an investment if you plan on doing a lot of shooting.
Here is a list of situations in which I use this lens a lot. Parties, children, people, pets, holiday cheer, cars, sports (as long as I am kinda close), architecture (as long as you are not TOO close), friends, and family. If you are someone that ONLY shoots landscapes or ONLY shoots wildlife in Africa, then I do not recommend this lens… It’s a mid-range lens for all those mid-range events that you may or may not want to capture in your life.
Often times, when shooting landscapes, I find that the wide-angle lens is just too wide. I pop this one on, and then the landscape suddenly starts to look a lot easier to compose. If you shoot with wide angle lenses, then you may know what I mean. The problem with wide-angle lenses is that if there is a particular structure or mountain you want to feature, the wide-angle can make it look too small. The 24-70 can help you feature that bit in a more prominent manner.
Below are a few shots that I have taken with this sweet lens. You might notice that I have a special post-processing technique. If you would like to find out more about that, you are welcome to visit my HDR Tutorial.
